Introduction
United States energy consumers spend over $700 billion a year
on energy. In 2003 U.S. oil imports hit a record high of 62% while
coal continues to be burned to produce over half of the country's
electricity.
With 95% of US energy subsidies going to traditional energy sources
like oil, coal, nuclear, and natural gas, we will continue to rely
on foreign countries and dirty fuels to satisfy our energy needs
if no action is taken to reverse this situation.
The mission of CERC's Energy Committee is:
• Reduce the environmental impact of energy used during
the conventions.
• Offset all of the greenhouse gas emissions associated
with convention energy use and develop a GHG offset criteria for
the DNC and the RNC that will meet or surpass future standards.
• Educate delegates and the public about alternative energy.
More about the Energy Committee's efforts may be found at Projects,
the Energy Committee Fact
Sheet, the Renewable Energy Credits
(REC) Fact Sheet and the Carbon
Offset Flier for Delegates.
