Introduction
In the past 40 years, the amount of waste material generated in
the United States has risen from 88 million tons a year to 230 million
tons a year. That's 4.4 pounds of waste per American per day! While
recycling rates are improving, more than two-thirds of the nation's
waste is still being discarded at landfills and incinerators. Given
the high costs and environmental threats associated with these practices,
it is incumbent on this country to boost recycling rates above the
current 30 percent.
CERC's Waste Committee's Mission is to:
• Influence event planners and caterers to use food rescue
services and divert food waste for composting.
• Influence event planners to deploy comprehensive recycling
programs for convention events.
• Salvage and recycle construction and demolition waste from
Fleet Center and other convention venues.
• Find reuse opportunities for all equipment used during
the convention.

for the Boston Convention may be found at Project
